what to do when you have writer's block

Sometimes one simply cannot think of what to write. At these time you might have to take a step back and do something completely unrelated to writing that helps clear and recenter your mind, like vacuuming or taking a walk. When it isn't possible to take a break I find the following helpful:

1. Putting yourself in the character's shoes. What's going on in his or her life? What might he/she be thinking? How would they respond?

2. What has happened in the book thus far? In a series of events what is likely to happen next?

3. Are you struggling to write about an experience or profession in which you know little about? If your character has a profession as a marine biologist and you struggle to come up with details of his/her life try reaching out to someone in that field.

4. Push on and come back. Sometimes you get stuck in between two parts. If your character just got a job in Nova Scotia, you can't think of how to get him/her to the point of moving but you can imagine what their job will be think once they arrive then go ahead and write the part you can write. When you finish writing part one and three then go back to two. You might have some brilliant ideas to fill in the gap now.

5. Read what you have to a listening ear. They might how questions that will actually inspire you to write.
